Once known as a naval powerhouse, Venice is now more known as a lavish, romantic city that must be visited at least once in a lifetime.

Jul 23 Dubrovnik, Croatia

Known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” Dubrovnik was founded in the 7th century by a group of refugees from Epidaurum (today’s Cavtat). It is known worldwide for its unique marble-paved squares, tall houses, steep-cobbled streets and fountains. The city walls, once used to as protection against its enemies, now keep motorists at bay in this picturesque town. UNESCO named the Old City a World Heritage Site, and Dubrovnik’s beautiful historic sites have been restored.

Legendary Corfu is a lush and romantic island, written about by Homer in his famous Odyssey. The island's history is full of battles, indicative of Corfu's turbulent position that lasted until modern times with unification with modern Greece in 1864. As well as a flower-strewn countryside and Adriatic-style villages, Corfu has splendid coastal scenery and some excellent secluded beaches.

Sarande, situated on an open sea gulf on the Ionian, is the capital of the e in Albania. It is one of the most important tourist attractions of the Albanian Riviera. Part of its original population moved to Greece during the large exodus in the early 1990s. Opposite Sarande is another tourist attraction, the Greek island of Corfu. Near Sarande are the remains of Butrint, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Katakolon is gateway to ancient Olympia, the chief sanctuary of Zeus. After many centuries of competition which began as early as the eighth century BC, the panhellenic festival was created in 776 AD. Ancient competitions included boxing, wrestling, running, jumping, and the discus throw. It is still honored with the Olympics Games every four years. The ancient site of Olympia is also home to the Temple of Zeus, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Naxos is gateway to the island of Sicily’s strategically significant northeastern region and is also famous as the most fertile island of the Cyclades. Its strategic position attracted many occupants, including the Greeks, Romans and Phoenicians. From Naxos, it is a short transfer to Taormina, resting 820 feet above the sea and overlooking Mount Etna. During the early 20th century, Taormina became a colony for expatriate artists and writers, including D H Lawrence.
